Radon Testing

The Chilliwack School District is dedicated to prioritizing the health and safety of all our students and staff. As part of our ongoing commitment to creating a safe learning and working environment, we are implementing an annual radon testing program in our school facilities.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can pose health risks when present in indoor environments at elevated levels. To mitigate these risks, we will conduct radon testing annually during the heating season, with 33% of our facilities undergoing testing each year. This systematic approach ensures comprehensive coverage over time, allowing us to identify and address any areas with elevated radon levels promptly.

If a location is found to have results above 200 Bq/m3, an investigation will be conducted to determine the source and extent of the elevated levels. Based on the investigation results, appropriate mitigation strategies will be implemented to reduce the radon levels to acceptable standards. After mitigation measures have been put in place, the location will be retested to ensure the levels have been adequately reduced.

For further information on radon testing and mitigation, we encourage you to visit the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) website. The BCCDC offers valuable resources and guidance on radon prevention and public health.
