Summer Learning Programs

Elementary Programs (July 4 - 17, 2017)

Location: Chilliwack Senior Secondary School / FVDES Site (46361 Yale Road, Chilliwack)

The intent of the Elementary Preview courses is to introduce students to the skills needed to be successful in school, and to develop or maintain an appreciation for learning within 40 hours of instructional time during the month of July.

July 4 to July 17 2017 (Two-Week Program / 40 hr Program)

Time: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

The 3 R's on the Move (Reading/ Writing/ Math & Movement) - Grade 1 
This course has been designed to meet the specific needs of students entering, or just finishing Grade 1. These courses will focus on developing foundation skills in Mathematics and Literacy, with some physical activity too.

Be Fit with Lit- Grade 2-3 and Grade 4-6 
Maintain and improve your child's reading and writing level through the summer months and stay active at the same time. This program is designed to improve their abilities and create a love of books and words. There will be some physical activity too.

Math on the Move Grade 2-3 and Grade 4-6
Strengthen your child’s basic Math and problem-solving skills, helping prepare them for the next grade. Math and physical activity can be fun too!

Digital Literacy- Grades 4,5 and 6

This course has been designed for students as they begin to utilize informational technologies at home and in the school system. Students will learn to safely use technology to: access, analyze, evaluate and communicate information.

NEW!!!!! Coding for Kids (Imagine, Program, Share, Repeat) - Grades 4,5 and 6

This course will develop and apply your child's coding and computational thinking skills while staying active at the same time. This course will teach your child the Scratch programming language and how to apply it in a variety of situations (animation, game design and real-world application). Collaboration with peers is built into the course as a fundamental part of the coding process. Your child will also be active in physical activities as a part of each school day.

NEW!!!! English as a Second Language (ELL) Grades 1-3

This course will provide English Language Learners (Beginners and Intermediate) with new and enriching experiences in order to provide vocabulary, written skills, and stimulate discussion and conversation on a broad number of topics.

This course will provide English Language Learners (Beginners and Intermediate) with new and enriching experiences in order to provide vocabulary, written skills, and stimulate discussion and conversation on a broad number of topics.

Middle School Programs

Location: Chilliwack Senior Secondary School / FVDES Site (46361 Yale Road, Chilliwack)

Middle School Summit Courses (Grades 7/8/9)

Dates: July 4th - July 28th 2017

Times: 8:00 am - 12:15 pm

The Summer Learning Middle School Summit Courses is a cross-curricular project based learning format that provides students with an opportunity to develop skills and meet learning outcomes within 80 hours of instruction during a 4-week period. Course Completion and Preview Course Students will work with teachers and student mentors on cross-curricular projects or inquiries designed to cover the essential learning objectives in the core academic subjects (Math, Science, English and Social Studies).  Project based inquiry will occur for part of the day, and, for the other part of the day; students will be engaged in Daily Physical Activities such as: minor games, field trips, hiking, rock climbing, etc. Along the way with meeting the learning outcomes we are aiming to improve student engagement, as well as creating an appreciation of a healthy balanced lifestyle.

Course Completion Students are required to attend Summer Learning in order to obtain credit for courses they were unsuccessful in completing throughout the school year.  All Course Completion Students will register for a Middle School Summit Course and upon completion of the course, the homeschool will determine if sufficient outcomes have been met to grant credit.

Pre-Calc Math 10 Preview (Only Current Gr. 9 Students Can Register). Time 8:00 am - 12:30 pm (July 4 - July 14 2017) This course is designed to introduce students to the Math 10 Foundations and Pre-Calculus learning outcomes.

Secondary School Courses

(For students in Gr.9/10/11)

Sustainable Vegetable Production (July 4th - August 31, 2017)

Times: Tuesday and Fridays (8:00 am - 2:00 pm)

This unique outdoor course will take place at both the Sardis Secondary School Greenhouse and the new Sardis Secondary School Farm (on Richardson Avenue). Students will be taught about food production through practical hands-on experiences. Students will learn skills in land preparation, planting, weed control, pest management, fertilizing, pruning, harvesting, marketing and sales. They will also work alongside community partners who are specialists in the various commodities grown. As a side benefit, students will be consumers of the various foods grown and will be encouraged to prepare the food and eat it with their families.

Course offerings:

1. Skills Explorations 10 (Offered to current Grade 9 students) - 4 credits (80 hrs)

2. Independent Directed Studies (IDS) 12 (Offered to current Grade 10/11 students) - 40 hrs (2 credits)

3. Independent Directed Studies (IDS) 12 (Offered to current Grade 10/11 students) - 80 hrs (4 credits)
